HELPING PEOPLE, HELP THEMSELVES!

Adoloscent & Young People

The adolescents in the relocated slum clusters and peri-urban villages of Delhi are disadvantaged due to conservative patriarchal socio-cultural milieu, poor socio-economic conditions, lack of knowledge, opportunities and poor access to quality services for education, health (including reproductive and sexual health) and skill training.

In the absence of effective support systems in the form of empathic parents and teachers ,peer support groups ,sensitive health professionals etc., the adolescents depend on cheap literature, movies or half baked knowledge of their peers. They explore their sexuality in form of seeking partners in “dosti” (friendship), teasing and pre marital casual sexual activity, all the time unaware of their responsibilities , rights and risks involved. The adolescents are also deprived of opportunities and trainings to improve their livelihood skills which in turn affect their self-confidence , negotiating skills and ability to influence life decisions including marriage and child bearing.

We work towards enabling adolescent girls and boys (in the age group of 10-19 years) to have a healthy and successful transition to adulthood by integrating life skill training in range of services like school gender sensitization program, the vocational training classes and school level HIV awareness sessions. We also conduct skill training classes in Beauty Culture, Computer applications , Cutting & tailoring and hand and machine embroidery for enhancing the livelihood opportunities of adolescents.

We believe that adolescent and young people are a vital resource of a community. We engage and encourage them to effectively channelize/disseminate important messages in the community as peer leaders, as members of community based street theatre group, as teachers for younger slum kids and as key population facilitators for high risk behavior groups.
